titleOfInvention Apparatus and method for determining state of charge in a redox flow battery via limiting currents
abstract The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for determining the ratio of the oxidized form and the reduced form of a redox couple in a solution, each method comprising: (a) a fixed first working electrode and a first counter electrode. Contacting the solution; b) applying a first potential to the first working electrode and measuring a first constant current; (c) applying a second potential to the first working electrode and measuring a second constant current, wherein signs of the first current and the second current are not the same, and the first current and the second current The ratio of the absolute value of is reflects the ratio of the oxidized and reduced forms of the redox couple in the solution. When used in connection with monitoring/controlling an electrochemical cell, a further embodiment includes (d) oxidation of the redox couple in the solution to the extent that it depends on the ratio of the absolute value of the first current and the second current. Embodiments include embodiments further comprising the step of oxidizing or reducing the solution to alter the balance of the reduced form and the reduced form. This embodiment can be used in connection with maintaining an electrochemical cell, stack, or system.
