A process for the preparation of overbased calcium sulfonate or calcium magnesium sulfonate grease using one or more delay periods between the addition of at least some accelerating acid such as DDBSA and at least some of the next subsequently added ingredients is disclosed. The delay period may be a temperature control delay or maintenance delay period. The overbased calcium sulfonate or calcium magnesium sulfonate grease composition allows for a reduced amount of less than 22% overbased calcium sulfonate, including 0.5% -5% promoted acid, and a reduction in phosphate calcium hydroxide. The amount is allowed to provide a 10-25% hydroxide equivalent basicity of the total hydroxide equivalent basicity due to the hydroxyapatite calcium and the added calcium hydroxide while maintaining a high dropping point. |
