The present invention is directed to a liquid crystal medium comprising a self-aligning additive that creates a homeotropic (vertical) alignment of the liquid crystal medium on the surface or cell walls of the liquid crystal display. Accordingly, the present invention also includes a liquid crystal display having homeotropic alignment of a liquid crystal medium without a typical imide alignment layer. The liquid crystal medium is optionally supplemented by polymerizable or polymerized components that serve as stabilization of alignment, adjustment of the tilt angle, and / or as a passivating layer. |
