Disclosed are surfactant mediated, free radical initiated emulsion / dispersion polymerization of n-vinyl formamide with styrene or substituted styrene copolymers, and subsequent hydrolyzed formamide, amine and styrene functionality. Polymerization methods, polymer compositions and hydrolysis of the polymers are also disclosed. These polymers having cationic functional groups can be used in paper applications as dry strength additives, wet strength additives, retention aids, drainage aids, sizing agents, sizing accelerators and pitch and tackiness modifiers. |
