The embodiments disclosed herein include methods of modifying synthetic garnets used in RF applications to reduce or eliminate yttrium or other rare earth metals from garnets without adversely affecting the magnetism of the material do. Some embodiments include replacing a portion of yttrium with bismuth in the dodecahedral site and introducing one or more higher valence ions into the octahedral and tetrahedral sites. In addition, calcium can be added to the dodecahedron site for valence compensation induced by high valence ions, effectively replacing all or most of yttrium (Y) in the microwave device garnet. Modified synthetic garnets having substituted yttrium (Y) can be used in a variety of microwave magnetic devices such as circulators, isolators, and resonators. |
