titleOfInvention | Apparatus for treating disorders of the sinuses |
abstract | The medical device for the treatment of the sinus openings includes a handle, a grooming sheath, a rail, a guide wire, a balloon catheter and a balloon catheter transfer mechanism. The handle has a proximal end, a distal end and a longitudinal axis along the length of the handle. The grooming sheath has a distal end and a proximal end, wherein the proximal end of the grooming sheath is attached to the distal end of the handle. The rail has a distal end and a proximal end and is partially disposed within the grooming sheath to define an annular lumen between the rail and the grooming sheath. The guide wire extends operatively from the distal end of the rail and the balloon catheter is at least partially disposed within the handle and annular lumen. The balloon catheter transfer mechanism is operatively disposed on the handle and is configured for advancing and retracting the balloon catheter both through the handle and the annular lumen and through both the rail and the guide wire by user operation of the balloon catheter transfer mechanism . A method for treating a sinus opening includes partially inserting a medical device for treatment of a sinus opening into an anatomical structure of a patient and then inserting a guide wire operatively extending from the rails of the medical device into the sinus opening of the patient . The method further comprises advancing the balloon catheter from the annular lumen of the medical device and along both the rails and guide wires of the medical device. The method also includes treating the sinus opening through inflation of the balloon catheter. In this manner, the annular lumen is between the rails of the medical device and the grooming sheath, and advancement is achieved through user manipulation of the balloon catheter transfer mechanism of the medical device. |
