abstract A surgical tool system according to an embodiment of the present invention includes a surgical tool and an interferometry system optically connected to the surgical tool. The surgical instrument includes a body part, a sensor part at least attached to or embedded in the body part, and a surgical part at least attached to or embedded in an opposing end of the sensor part from the body part. The sensor unit includes an interference measurement optical sensor that determines a reference distance that varies in response to either the force or the torque when at least one of a force or a torque is applied to the surgical portion of the surgical tool.
