The present invention relates to a process for the production of acrolein from glycerol or glycerin wherein the dehydration of glycerol or glycerin is carried out in the presence of a catalyst based on zirconium oxide and the active phase is present as at least the following components : a) silicon oxide, zirconium oxide and at least one metal M oxide, wherein the metal is selected from tungsten, cerium, manganese, niobium, tantalum, vanadium and titanium; And b) titanium oxide, zirconium oxide and at least one metal M oxide, wherein the metal is selected from tungsten, cerium, manganese, niobium, tantalum, vanadium and silicon. The method of the present invention can be used to prepare 3- (methylthio) propionic acid aldehyde (MMP), 2-hydroxy-4-methylthiobutyronitrile (HMTBN), methionine and analogs thereof. |
