An object of the present invention is to realize a nonaqueous electrolyte battery capable of exhibiting a high energy density, a high battery voltage and an excellent lifetime characteristic, and capable of easily performing voltage management. According to one embodiment, there is provided an active material comprising a complex oxide having a quadratic crystal structure. This composite oxide is represented by the general formula Li 2 + w Na 2 - x M y y Ti 6 - z M 2 z O 14 + δ . Here, M1 is at least one selected from the group consisting of Cs and K.
