abstract The present invention relates to methods and apparatus for determining the presence of microorganisms, for example, in seawater or other water samples. Means is provided to take a sample of the water to be tested, move through a series of reservoirs, and mix with an indicator, such as a stain that binds the DNA of any microorganism in the sample. Any mixing of indicators is measured, for example, by a variety of devices suitable for measuring a spectroscopic photosystem or indicator.
