abstract Carbon or cobalt used as a conductive agent in an electrode of an alkaline secondary battery is oxidized under the influence of oxygen generated from the positive electrode. If the conductive agent is oxidized and deteriorated during repetition of charging and discharging, the electric conductivity is lost and the cycle life of the battery is shortened. When the inside of the alkaline secondary battery is filled with hydrogen, hydrogen generated in the positive electrode is combined with hydrogen inside the battery. As a result, the conductive agent contained in the electrode is not oxidized. A battery having excellent cycle life characteristics can be realized.
