abstract A switching power supply fabricated according to the disclosed technique drives a flash lamp of a dermatological treatment device to emit a relatively small light pulse sequence aligned with a specific location within the waveform of an AC line source. Such a power supply not only can therapeutically heat the target chromophores in the skin region without causing undesirable damage to the tissue in which sufficient light energy is enclosed as a whole, But also provides additional benefits that do not need to be drawn substantially. The disclosed power supply further compensates for the degradation of the flash lamp during its service life by modifying its operation based on a predetermined value indicative of flash lamp aging / efficiency characteristics. The flash lamp and its associated stored value are preferably included in a replaceable cartridge that facilitates user retention of the dermatological treatment device.
