abstract | The present invention discloses latex emulsions that are not sensitive to water and can be used to form coating compositions with good blush resistance and retort properties. In some embodiments of the present invention, the coating composition is used to coat substrates such as cans and packaging materials for storage of food and beverages. The coating composition is prepared by mixing an ethylenically unsaturated monomer component and a stabilizing agent comprising a strong acid in a carrier to form a monomer emulsion, reacting the monomer emulsion with an initiator to form a latex emulsion, and reacting the latex emulsion with a neutralizing agent . The present invention also discloses a method of coating a substrate using the coating composition, a substrate coated with the coating composition. The latex emulsion can be prepared by mixing a ethylenically unsaturated monomer component and a stabilizer containing a strong acid in a carrier to form a monomer emulsion and reacting the monomer emulsion with an initiator to form a latex emulsion, The stabilizer is present in an amount of from about 0.1% to about 2.0% by weight of the polymeric solid. |
