Composite particles having an antioxidant-based protective system, and topical compositions comprising the same |
abstract |
The present invention relates to a topical composition containing a dispersion of composite particles. These composite particles each contain one or more core particles encapsulated or entrapped within a polymeric shell. At least a portion of the core particles are made of a material capable of generating reactive oxygen species (ROS). Each composite particle further comprises (1) a first antioxidant encapsulated or entrapped together with the core particles in a polymeric shell to inhibit or erase the resulting ROS in the vicinity of the core particle, and (2) And a second antioxidant coated on the polymeric shell to prevent or reduce oxidative damage (e.g., lipid peroxidation) to the polymeric shell. Thus, the particle dispersion of the present invention can be readily formulated with a topical sunscreen composition by an organic sunscreen that is sensitive to oxidative degradation or degradation, providing improved protection against skin damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet light . |
