abstract Silicon carbide based materials are described which exhibit high strength, good thermal shock resistance, high resistance to abrasion, and chemical stability to harsh environmental conditions. Said carbide ceramics comprise a? -Sialon bond phase in which sintering is promoted by one or more rare earth oxide sintering aids incorporated into the batch mixture as starting material. The residual rare earth sintering aids are selected to give good mechanical and fire resistance properties.
