titleOfInvention | Siliceous materials having tunable porosity and surface morphology and methods of synthesizing same |
abstract | Non-spherical silica particles having numerous porous branches are disclosed and claimed. The porous branch is oriented in an overhang, extending, annular, and / or agglomerated. The additives introduced during the synthesis of the particles modify the pore volume and morphology. The variability of the pore volume is such that the pores include an inner diameter of from about 2 A to about 50,000 A. Synthesizing the particles involves mixing the aqueous silicate solution with an acidic heel solution in a reaction vessel and continuously or intermittently stirring to form a mixture. The stirring may be selectively performed at a variable speed. The additive is introduced into the mixture at a controlled rate, wherein the additive imparts a pH change to the mixture from a lower pH to a higher pH to induce precipitation of the silica particulate. Optionally, the metal dopant may be introduced into at least a portion of the outer surface of the particles and / or pores that may be modified and / or an inner surface located inside the pores. |
