titleOfInvention | An improved process for the preparation of para-nitrobenzyl bromide |
abstract | An improved process for the preparation of p-nitrobenzyl bromide from p-nitrotoluene is disclosed wherein the excess reactant in carbon tetrachloride is treated with a 2: 1 bromide-bromate reagent and recycled to the next batch without any further treatment, The product is efficiently separated by selective cooling crystallization and has high purity. Continue the cycle until a desired quality product is obtained with sufficient yield. The solvent and p-nitrotoluene are then recovered from the mother liquor and the remainder treated with sodium borohydride to convert the impurities to reactants or products and then recycled to the process to avoid waste disposal problems, A desired product with > 95% yield and bromine atom efficiency > 88% for toluene is obtained. |
