abstract A method and apparatus for processing a first sequence of images and a second sequence of images to compare a first sequence and a second sequence are disclosed. (1) processing image data for each of a plurality of neighboring pixels in an image, thereby generating at least one individual descriptor element, each including one or more bits, for each of the neighboring pixels; and (2) Processes each of the plurality of images in the first sequence and each of the plurality of images in the second sequence by forming a plurality of words from the descriptor elements of the image such that each word comprises a unique combination of descriptor element bits. Each word for the second sequence is generated from a combination of descriptor element bits, such as each word for the first sequence. And compares the first sequence with the second sequence by comparing the word generated for the plurality of images in the first sequence with the word generated for the plurality of images in the second sequence.
