abstract The present invention relates to a process for preparing racemic or optically active? -Glycerophosphoryl choline, which comprises reacting choline phosphate or its salt with racemic and optically pure (S) and (R) -3-halo -1,2-propanediol in the presence of a medium to produce racemic and optically active D- or L-? -Glycerophosphorylcholine in a large amount by a substitution reaction using an inorganic base which increases the activity of the reaction at a high temperature in the presence of a medium . The process for producing racemic or optically active D or L- alpha -glycerophosphorylcholine according to the present invention is economical using a low-cost starting material as compared with the conventional method, one-pot reaction, as well as the use of an inorganic base which increases the activity of the reaction, the quantitative racemic and optically active D or L-α-glycerol There is an effect that mass production of phosphorylcholine and salts thereof can be effected.
