abstract The present invention relates to a method of producing a comb-like antithrombotic conjugate, wherein substantially all of the side chains of the water-soluble poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) are extended by ring-opening polymerization to form a copolymer wherein substantially all of the ends are bonded to the anti- . This method is also provided for preventing or reducing thrombus formation on the device surface by applying a coating comprising a comb-shaped antithrombotic conjugate to at least a portion of the implantable device. The first or sub-layer of the coating is prepared by mixing the polymeric material and the biologically active agent together with a solvent, thereby forming a homogeneous solution. A second or outer layer comprising a comb-like antithrombotic conjugate can be applied over the drug-containing inner layer, for example, using an immersion coating or spray coating process. Alternatively, the comb antithrombotic conjugate can be used as a matrix material to encapsulate a pharmaceutical preparation to form a microcrystalline or nanocomposite before the microcrystalline or nanocomposite is deposited on a medical device.n n n n Antithrombotic conjugate,
