abstract | In the present invention, a high-performance crosslinked polybenzoxazole or polybenzothiazole polymer membrane and a method for producing and using the membrane have been developed. The cross-linked polybenzoxazole or polybenzothiazole polymer membrane is prepared by 1) first introducing a polyimide polymer containing a pendent functional group (e.g., -OH or -SH) in the ortho position to the heterocyclic imide nitrogen in the polymer backbone and a cross- ; 2) fabricating a polyimide film from the polymer; 3) converting the polyimide membrane into a polybenzoxazole or polybenzothiazole membrane by heating under an inert atmosphere such as nitrogen or under vacuum; And 4) finally, converting the membrane into a high performance crosslinked polybenzoxazole or polybenzothiazole membrane by crosslinking treatment, preferably UV radiation. The membrane can be made in any convenient shape. The high performance crosslinked polybenzoxazole or polybenzothiazole polymer membranes of the present invention are suitable for various liquid, gas and vapor separations. |
