A friction material composition comprising a binder, a fiber base, a grinding material, an inorganic filler, an organic filler, and at least one of zinc, cellulose fiber as a fiber base, flame resistant fiber as a fiber base, and a specific amount of iron-based fiber as a fiber base. It is set as the said friction material and the friction material composition whose Mohs hardness is 8 or more and content of the inorganic abrasive material with a particle diameter of 1 micrometer or more is 1 wt% or less. As a result, when the friction material composition is used as a brake pad for a passenger car, the aggression of the facing material is less than that of the conventional product, and the friction coefficient during braking is high when the use method of repeatedly applying the braking from the high-speed running is high, and the pad wear is reduced.
