titleOfInvention | Biodegradable Polyester for Fiber Formation |
abstract | The present invention is directed to a process for forming biodegradable polyesters suitable for fibers. Specifically, the biodegradable polyesters are melt processed at controlled moisture content for initiation of the hydrolysis reaction. Without wishing to be bound by theory, it is believed that the hydroxyl groups present in the water can attack the ester bonds of the polyester, causing chain breakage or “depolymerization” of the polyester molecule into one or more shorter ester chains. By selectively adjusting the reaction conditions (eg, water content, temperature, shear rate, etc.), hydrolyzed polyesters having lower molecular weight than the starting polymer can be obtained. Polymers with such lower molecular weights have higher melt flow rates and lower apparent viscosities, which are useful for a wide variety of fiber forming applications such as meltblowing of nonwoven webs.n n n n Hydrolyzed Biodegradable Polyester, Melt Flow Rate, Apparent Viscosity, Meltblown Web |
