titleOfInvention | Preparation of Brominated Styrenic Polymers or Resins |
abstract | Bromination of the styrenic polymers is carried out in a closed reaction system such that HX coproducts, where HX is HBr or HC1, or both, are retained in the bromination reaction mixture at superatmospheric pressure. Preferably, the reaction mixture comprising the brominated styrenic polymer formed and substantially all of the HX coproduct is discharged into an aqueous quenching medium. Working in this manner, the reaction is terminated, the brominated styrenic polymer and the substantially all HX coproducts of the desired bromine content are captured in the same operation, reducing process equipment costs and facilitating the processing of the reaction mixture. |
