abstract | A heterogeneous catalyst system having a catalytically active gold deposited on a composite support medium, a method for preparing the system, and a method of using the system are provided. The composite support medium is produced by providing nanoporous material on at least a portion of the surface of the carbonaceous host material. In an exemplary embodiment, relatively fine nanoporous guest particles are coated or otherwise provided on the surface of the relatively coarse activated carbon particles. Catalytically active gold may be deposited on one or both of the guest or host material before or after the guest material and host material combine to form the composite host material.
