abstract The invention comprises contacting and treating a starting material with at least one alkali metal salt selected from the group consisting of chloride, sulfate, phosphate, monohydrogen phosphate, dihydrogen phosphate, nitrate and mixtures thereof, and sodium carbonate. A method for preparing a sheet silicate composition, wherein the contacting of the starting material with sodium carbonate is carried out simultaneously with or after the contact with the at least one alkali metal salt. The present invention also provides sheet silicate compositions and uses thereof, and methods for working up alkaline active sheet silicate compositions.
