abstract The exhaust probe is located in an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders and a fuel-metered injection valve assigned to the cylinders. The exhaust probe is located in the exhaust track and the measurement signal of the exhaust probe represents the air-fuel ratio in each cylinder. The measurement signal is obtained at a predefined crankshaft angle CRK_SAMP relative to the reference position of the piston of each cylinder and assigned to a particular cylinder. By the controller, operating variables that affect the air-fuel ratio in each cylinder are generated in accordance with the measurement signals obtained for each cylinder. The defined crankshaft angle is adapted according to the figure of merit based on the uneven drive of the drive shaft of the internal combustion engine.
