abstract The present invention relates to a whitening composition containing, as an active ingredient, an arylthiourea derivative having the following formula (I), which has a higher inhibition rate of melanin production than N-phenylthiourea: (I) In Formula I, R 1 represents hydrogen, C 1 to C 6 alkyl, C 3 to C 8 cycloalkyl, or phenyl with or without substituents, said substituents being C 1 to C 3 alkyl, halogen, hydroxy, or C 1 to C 3 alkoxy, R 2 represents hydrogen or C 1 to C 6 alkyl, R 3 represents hydrogen, C 1 to C 9 alkyl, C 1 to C 6 alkoxy, hydroxy, halogen or C 1 to C 6 alkylamine, n 1 and n 2 each independently represent 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4, except when R 1, R 2 , and R 3 are all hydrogen and n 1 and n 2 are both 0 ).
