abstract | The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for using spectroscopic measurements of the color of a target coating on a substrate, such as an automobile body to be color-matched. This method uses a pigment mixture model to produce a color-matching coating composition that, when applied as a coating, provides color-matching with the target coating and other desirable coating properties such as durability, gloss and adhesion. Various pigment combinations are analyzed to obtain an approximate spectral curve that substantially matches the spectral curve of the target color. The pigment optimization function is then used to find the optimal blending ratio. These functions use tolerance factors such as color-matching proximity, metamorphism index, spectral curve shape, price, and pigment durability based on color tolerance equations. Each factor is assigned a weight according to the particular end use of the composition. The method of the present invention provides for the manufacture of automotive repaints for use in automotive repainting applications which produce color-matched repaints which are color-matched with undamaged parts of automobile bodies and thus can be applied to damaged parts of automobile bodies.
