abstract The present invention provides a process for modifying zeolite catalysts that increases the para-xylene selectivity of zeolite catalysts in toluene methylation. This method includes forming a slurry of a ZSM-5 type zeolite and an aqueous phosphorus compound solution. Water is removed from the slurry to provide a phosphorus treated ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst that is not steamed without phosphorus deposition on the catalyst by organic phosphorus deposition. The resulting un steamed phosphorus treated ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst has a pore volume of 0.2 ml / g or less and provides greater than 80% para-xylene selectivity in mixed xylene when used in toluene methylation.n n n n Toluene methylation, zeolite catalyst, para-xylene, phosphorus treatment
