abstract |
A process for the production of substantially plate-shaped alumina particles having a high cost ratio is disclosed. Nanosized particles of an aluminum precursor compound, optionally formed by milling, are mixed and heat treated with sufficient volumetric diluent to form substantially separate plate-shaped alpha alumina particles dispersed in the diluent. Mineralizers may be added to lower the effective melting point of the system. Substantially separated plate-shaped particles may be formed without stirring when the heat treatment is carried out below the melting point of the diluent. |
