abstract | The present invention is a hemoglobin molecule (Hb) having 6 ± 1 PEG chains, two of which are bound to Cys-93 (β) of Hb and the other PEG chains are on ε-NH 2 of Hb. It provides Hb bound to the introduced thiol group. In addition, the present invention provides a method comprising the steps of: (a) reacting Hb with an 8 to 15-fold excess of iminothiolane to form thiolated Hb, and (b) 16-fold to functionalized thiolated Hb with a maleimide moiety.
