abstract | Processes for preparing pentafluoroethane are described. This process reacts dichlorotrifluoroethane, hydrogen chloride, unreacted hydrogen fluoride and perchloroethylene by reacting perchloroethylene with hydrogen fluoride in a vapor phase in a reactor in the presence of a fluorinated catalyst or in a first plurality of reactors. Producing a composition comprising the same. The composition undergoes a separation step and has a compound having at least 95% by weight of dichlorotrifluoroethane and less than 0.5% by weight of formula C 2 Cl 6-x F x , wherein x is from 0 to 6, based on the total weight of the organic compounds in the composition Yields a purified composition). The composition from the separation step is then reacted with hydrogen fluoride in the gas phase in a second reactor or a second plurality of reactors in the presence of a fluorination catalyst to produce less than 0.5% by weight based on the total weight of pentafluoroethane and the organic compound in the composition. A composition comprising a chloropentafluoroethane is produced. |
