abstract | The present invention discloses a method for producing a carbon material for producing carbon fibers or carbon tubes, in particular branched carbon fibers or carbon tubes, in a so-called self-growth manner without providing a carbon source from the outside. Specifically, a polymer fiber or a polymer tube is formed using a metal catalyst or a precursor of a metal catalyst and a halogenated polymer, the polymer fiber or polymer tube is dehalogenated, and then the polymer fiber or polymer tube is heat treated to form a carbon fiber. Or preparing a carbon tube, and self-grown carbon fibers or carbon tubes on the branch using unhalogenated polymers, polymer fibers or polymer tubes and metal catalysts. The carbon material thus obtained can be used in various fields where a carbon material is required, and includes a metal catalyst with a large specific surface area, thereby storing hydrogen, battery materials of a fuel cell or a secondary battery such as an electrode catalyst, a carrier, a fine pore diffusion layer, and hydrogen storage.
