titleOfInvention Materials and methods for improving the properties of SPD emulsions and films
abstract Emulsifiers for use in forming films for suspended particle devices (SPD), wherein the film comprises a crosslinked matrix polymer with droplets of a plurality of liquid light valve suspensions dispersed therein. The emulsifier is formed from a copolymer comprising one or more first and second fragments that differ from one another in their chemical affinity, composition and polarity. The first of the fragments is soluble in the uncured liquid matrix polymer used to form the film but insoluble in the liquid suspension medium in which the droplets are dispersed. The second of the fragments is soluble in the liquid suspension medium of the droplets but insoluble in the uncured liquid matrix polymer. The first and second fragments are substantially equal in refractive index, where the refractive indices of the fragments are within 0.010 of that of each phase of the emulsion formed with the emulsifier. In one embodiment, the first fragment comprises a material selected from the group consisting of linear organic siloxanes, branched organic siloxanes, linear alkyl groups, branched alkyl groups, linear fluoroalkyl groups and branched fluoroalkyl groups. Next, the second fragment is a linear ester, branched ester, linear (meth) acrylate, branched (meth) acrylate, linear amide, branched amide, linear amine, branched amine, linear epoxy group, branched It includes materials selected from the group consisting of linear functional groups including epoxy groups, hydroxyl or acid functional groups, and branched functional groups including hydroxyl or acid functional groups. The emulsifier is suitable for slowing the growth of the droplets, thereby substantially preventing condensation of the droplets of the liquid light valve suspension while the film is formed.
