abstract A method of making a bismuth molybdate precursor solution using a metalorganic decomposition (MOD) treatment consisting of the formation of a precursor solution of bismuth (Bi) and molybdenum (Mo) of hexanoate is disclosed. The precursor solution is used to make bismuth molybdate thin films by spin coating and spray pyrolysis. Bismuth molybdate thin films have alpha and gamma phases that are very sensitive to ethanol gas. The detection of ethanol gas is based on a change in the electrical conductivity of the thick film of semiconductor oxide that detects the resulting urea from ethanol gas in an oxygen containing atmosphere. Adhesion very thick films, including quartz, have been produced on other substrates when drying is achieved by spray pyrolysis. The thin film of the invention made by spray pyrolysis responds very quickly to ethanol detection, for example typically 5 seconds.n n n n Bismuth, molybdate, precursor
