| abstract | The present invention discloses an assembly in an exchange column comprising a plurality of overall vertical adjacent layers of structured packing. Each layer includes a plurality of overall horizontally adjacent structured packing members, each member having an upper edge and a lower edge. Each layer has a top that includes a plurality of top edges and a bottom that includes a plurality of bottom edges. In the first layer of packing, at least one of the upper and lower edges is modified on at least one member. In the second layer of packing located vertically adjacent to the first layer, the upper and lower edges are substantially unchanged on all the members, thereby not altering the upper edges and unchanged on one or more of the members in the second layer.
