abstract An absorbent article is provided having a central region that is selectively extensible in the longitudinal direction and two terminal regions adjacent to the central region that are selectively extensible in the transverse direction. When used as a garment, such as a disposable diaper or pants-type absorbent garment, the central region provides optional longitudinal (front to back) stretchability in terms of the wearer's crotch, and the two distal regions provide front and rear wearer wear.
