abstract Impurities are removed from the gas and introduced into the cell 15, and the light intensity of the light transmitted through the cell 15 is measured as a reference. The gas obtained by the two measurements by introducing a gas containing impurities of known concentration into the same cell 15, maintaining the same temperature and pressure, and measuring the light intensity of the light passing through the cell 15 The absorbance of impurities is determined from the ratio of the intensities. The absorbance of this impurity is stored in the memory 20a as a function of impurity concentration. A gas containing an impurity having an unknown concentration is introduced into the cell 15 and maintained at the same temperature and the same pressure, and the light intensity of the light passing through the cell 15 is measured to determine the impurity obtained in this measurement.
