titleOfInvention | Apparatus for transporting and storing nuclear fuel rods and methods for using the apparatus |
abstract | Apparatus suitable for transporting and storing nuclear fuel rods include a basket having a storage cell formed of a metal plate honeycomb gridwork of a straight structure, the plate of the storage cell formed by the gridwork to allow conductive heat transfer. The metal plates have neutron absorbers disposed in the areas forming the walls of the storage cells, welded to each other at the intersection so that all adjacent edges are completely connected. A method of making a device suitable for transporting and storing nuclear fuel rods comprises the steps of a) providing a metal plate having a material disposed on the slot and the metal plate, b) neutron absorption on the side of the storage cell with the slot having adjacent edges. Aligning the plates to intersect to form a honeycomb gridwork of storage cells having a material, and c) all adjacent edges of the storage cells formed by the gridwork allow conductive heat transfer and provide a rigid structure. Welding the plates to each other at the intersection so as to be fully connected. |
