abstract The present invention is directed to a process for converting an enantiomeric mixture of hydrophobic esters in a biocatalyst-mediated enantioselective manner using a biphasic solvent system. More particularly, the present invention enzymatically processes antiviral compounds such as 2-hydroxymethyl-5- (5-fluorocytocin-1-yl) -1,3-oxathiolane (FTC) and analogs thereof in a heterogeneous reaction system. A method for synthesizing in an intervening enantioselective manner.
