abstract | A direct smelting method is described for producing metals from metal containing feeds. The method includes forming a molten bath having a metal layer and a slag layer on the metal layer and smelting a feed containing metal injected from the metal layer. The method also generates an upper gas flow from the metal layer, which traps the melt in the metal layer and transports the melt to the slag layer to form a turbulent region at least at the interface between the slag layer and the metal layer.
