abstract The present invention relates to, for example, a dichroic polarizing film prepared by first dissolving a second polymer such as polyvinyl alcohol and polyvinyl pyrrolidone or sulfonated polyester in a solvent. The weight ratio of polyvinyl alcohol to second polymer is about 5: 1 to 100: 1. The film is coated on a substrate, dried and stretched in at least one direction of the film. The film contains a dichroic dye such as iodine to form a dichroic polarizer. This polarizer can be used to make an optical polarizer with a multilayer optical film such as a reflective polarizer. This multilayer optical film may contain two or more sets of polyester films, at least one of which is birefringent and may be stretched and oriented.
