abstract | It is an object of the present invention to provide a novel catalyst suitable for the gas phase oxidation of methylbenzenes in the presence of oxygen molecules and to produce the corresponding aromatic aldehydes in high yield and the high yields of the corresponding aromatic aldehydes from the methylbenzenes using said catalysts. It is to provide a method for producing a method, and a method for producing cyclohexane dimethanol by hydrogenating the phthalaldehydes obtained thereby.n n n The catalyst for oxidation of methylbenzenes of the present invention, which is used to gas-phase oxidize methylbenzenes in the presence of oxygen molecules to produce a corresponding aromatic aldehyde in high yield, can be prepared by the following general formula (1);n n n WaXbYcOx (1)n n n Wherein W represents a tungsten atom; X represents one or more elements selected from the group consisting of P, Sb, Bi and Si; Y represents Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Re, Cr, V, Nb At least one element selected from the group consisting of Ti, Zr, Zn, Cd, Y, La, Ce, B, Al, Tl, Sn, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Li, Na, K, Rb and Cs O represents an oxygen atom, provided that the ratio of a, b, and c is b = 0.5 to 10 and c = 0 to 15 when a = 12; x represents the oxidation of elements other than oxygen atoms.
