titleOfInvention | Reinforced Wood Bats |
abstract | The wood bat of the present invention comprises a solid wood core formed in the same shape as the standard wood bat but with slightly smaller dimensions. The barrel of the bat of the present invention includes a plurality of grooves in the striking area. One or more continuous layers of flexible fabric sleeves made of high strength fibers fit snugly over almost the entire outer surface of the wooden core, thereby forming a preformed bat assembly. The fabric sleeve extends slightly on the body of the core and shrinks on the handle of the core. Fiberglass braided sleeves whose first strand is aligned in an orientation of + 45 ° / -45 ° are suitable as fabric sleeves. When tensioning the braided sleeve strand on the handle portion, the strand tends to be more longitudinally aligned and fixed, thereby significantly increasing the reinforcement strength of the handle portion of the bat. With an epoxy resin self-curing at or near room temperature, the layer of sleeve is laminated in thin layers to the wooden bat with the final size dimension specified for the wooden batt. Suitable braided sleeves may be attached to the wooden core by using a hollow attachment tube that attaches the sleeve to the wooden core in two layers while simultaneously aligning the fabric strands in the desired orientation. By the molding technique of the present invention, the conventional plastic shrink tube is heat-shrinked to closely fit the preformed bat assembly. The heat-shrinkable tube is then used as a mold for laminating a layer of fabric sleeve to a wooden core with a curable resin. |
