Biodegradable polymer films and sheets useful as laminate coatings, wraps and other packaging materials |
abstract |
Biodegradable polymer blends for laminate coatings, wraps and other packaging materials made from at least one hard biopolymer and at least one soft biopolymer are disclosed. Hard polymers are hard and brittle, have glass transition temperatures above 10 ° C, and soft polymers are flexible and have glass transition temperatures below 0 ° C. Hard and soft polymers each have inherent advantages, but it has been found that blends of hard and soft polymers have superior elevated properties than are used alone. Biodegradable polymers include polyesters, polyesteramides and TPS. The polymer blend also includes an inorganic filler. Films and sheets made from polymer blends can be textured to increase bulk hand fill. The wrap can be made so that the wrap has dead-fold properties so that it remains in the packed position and does not return to planar form. The laminate film has good water vapor barrier properties measured by water vapor transmission coefficient (WVPC). |
