abstract The present invention relates to a method for increasing the retention and drainage levels of filler components in paper making furnish used in the papermaking process. The method includes preparing a slurry of filler component; Treating the slurry with 0.003% to 2.0% by weight of a phenolic enhancer based on the total solid weight of the paper stock to form a pretreated filler component slurry; Adding the pretreated slurry to the paper stock; Adding 0.003 to 0.5% by weight of a polymeric flocculant to the paper stock based on the total solid weight of the paper stock slurry, thereby increasing the retention and dehydration levels of the filler component in the paper stock. Preferred enhancers are condensates of phenol and formaldehyde, and preferred agglomerates contain acrylamide, methacrylamide, and / or N-vinylformamide.
