Ceramic materials having specific applications as insulating or thermal barrier coatings on metal substrates are provided. The ceramic material broadly comprises a residue comprising at least one oxide and a first oxide selected from the group consisting of zirconia, ceria and hafnia. At least one has Formula A 2 O 3 wherein A is selected from the group consisting of La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu, Tb, In, Sc, Y, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, Lu and mixtures thereof .
