abstract | The present invention provides compositions and methods for the prevention and prevention of neurological diseases associated with neuronal cell death. The invention includes the synthesis of 5-benzylaminosalicylic acid (BAS) and derivatives thereof. BAS and its derivatives protect cortical neurons from toxic damage by N-methyl-D-aspartate, Zn 2+ and reactive oxygens. Therefore, the present invention provides for stroke, traumatic brain injury and spine, accompanied by severe neuronal damage accompanied by excitatory toxicity, Zn 2+ neurotoxicity and free radical neurotoxicity. Provided are compositions and methods for treating spinal cord injury, epilepsy, and neurodegenerative diseases. |
