titleOfInvention | A angular rate sensor |
abstract | The present invention provides an angular velocity sensor for detecting angular velocity in at least two axes, preferably three axes. This angular velocity sensor comprises a vibrating structure 6 and comprises means for vibrating the vibrating structure 6 in a Cos 2θ carrier mode at a Cos 2θ carrier frequency. Rotation about one axis or other axes in the plane of the vibrating structure generates a Coriolis force that causes the rocking structure 6 to move in a carrier mode frequency about that axis. The vibrating structure 6 is substantially flat and substantially shaped like a ring or hoop and is designed with dimensions that coincide with Cos 2θ carrier mode vibration and rocking mode vibration, resulting in an axis about the plane of the structure 6. This results in resonance amplification of the rocking mode oscillations generated by the rotation. Rotation about the third axis normal with respect to the plane of the structure 6 generates a Coriolis force that couples the energy that attenuates the Cos 2θ response mode. The Cos 2θ response and rocking mode vibration amplification is proportional to the angular velocity applied and provides a means for detecting the Cos 2θ response mode and rocking mode vibrations and detecting the angular velocity applied therefrom. |
